What Should Parents Know Before Selecting an Abacus Institute?

For the last 15 years I have personally counselled more than 35,000 parents (India + USA + UK + Canada + Australia + Dubai). Today I’m giving you my complete “Red Flag vs Green Flag” checklist so you NEVER make those painful mistakes.

1. Duration of the Full Course (Biggest Hidden Secret)

❌ Red Flag: “Complete course in 6–9 months” or “Only 4–5 levels” ✅ Green Flag: Proper course has 8–12 levels and takes 2–3 years (minimum 600–800 teaching hours)

Why? Real mental abacus (Anzan) develops only after Level 6–7. Anything shorter is just “bead moving”, not brain development.

2. Is It Just Abacus or Complete Mental Maths + Brain Gym?

❌ They only teach addition/subtraction on abacus ✅ They teach:

• Abacus + Mental Maths
• Flash cards (speed visual training)
• Dictation (speed listening)
• Visualisation exercises
• Concentration games
• Both-hand finger gym

3. Teacher Training & Ratio

❌ One teacher handling 20–30 kids ❌ Teachers who learned abacus only 6 months ago ✅ Maximum 10–12 students per teacher ✅ Teachers who completed full course + 200-hour teacher training + minimum 2 years teaching experience

I personally reject 80% teacher applicants because they can’t do 10-digit mental arithmetic themselves!

4. Weekly Practice System (The Real Game-Changer)

❌ Only 1–2 classes per week, no homework tracking ✅ 5–6 days practice system:

• 2 live classes
• 5 days daily 15-minute worksheets
• Parent app showing daily speed & accuracy graph

Without daily practice, abacus is useless – just like gym without daily workout.

5. Speed Building Drills & Competitions

❌ No competitions, no ranking ✅ Monthly speed tests + quarterly national/online championships

Our kids do 200–300 sums in 10 minutes by Level 8. That’s how Olympiad & NTSE toppers are born!

6. Curriculum Language & Global Standard

❌ Only Hindi or only local books ✅ Books available in English + Hindi ✅ Follows international standards (Japanese Soroban + Chinese Zhusuan + Indian adaptations)

7. Fees vs Value (Don’t Fall for Cheap Trap)

Average wrong institute: ₹800–1200 per month → poor results → child loses interest Good institute: ₹1500–2500 per month → lifetime brain upgrade

Remember: You’re not paying for abacus beads. You’re paying for your child’s sharper brain for the next 80 years!

8. Physical vs Online – Which is Better?

9. Free Demo Class Red Flags

❌ They make the child do 50 sums in 30 minutes in demo (“See how fast he is!”) ✅ Proper 45–60 minute demo where child learns 1–2 new concepts calmly

Real learning is slow in the beginning, explosive later.

10. Parent Reviews – Where to Check?

Don’t trust only institute’s Facebook page. Check:

• Google reviews (look for 2024–2025 reviews)
• YouTube parent testimonials (video can’t be faked)
• Ask to talk to 2–3 current parents

11. Certificate Validity

❌ Fancy certificate printed on glossy paper ✅ Certificate recognised by registered company/ISO + skill actually visible in child
