Imagine your abacus is a mini apartment building:

• Top floor (Heaven bead): 1 bead = 5
• Ground floor (Earth beads): 4 beads = 1 each
• Reckoning bar = the balcony where beads come to “say hello”

Rule? ✅ Touch the bar = ACTIVE ✅ Away from bar = SLEEPING

Story #2: Priya’s Kachori Bead Trick (Age 7, 2019)

Thumb = King 👑 → Moves lower beads UP (1,2,3,4) Index finger = Minister 👆 → Moves upper bead DOWN (5)

Never use pinky! That’s like using a spoon to eat biryani – possible, but wrong. 😂

Practice Drill (Do it now!):

1. Start at 0 (all beads away)
2. Make 3: Thumb pushes 3 lower beads up
3. Make 7: Thumb does 2 lower, index brings upper down (5+2=7)
4. Make 9: Thumb does 4 lower, index brings upper down (5+4=9)

Tip #1: The “Clear the House” Rule

Before every sum: PUSH ALL BEADS AWAY → Like cleaning your room before Diwali. 🧹

Kids forget this → Confusion max!

Technical Bit (Only 10%, I Promise!)

• Upper bead (Heaven): Value = 5
• Lower beads (Earth): Value = 1 each (max 4)
• Max per column: 9 (5 + 4)
• To show 6: Upper down (5) + 1 lower up (1)
• To show 0: All beads away from bar

Pro Tip: Never have upper down + 5 lower – only 4 lower exist!

UK mom (Jaipur roots): “Sharma ji, beta upper bead ko upar kyun nahi le jaate?” 😭
