Step 1: Understand the Two Types of Beads

Every column on the abacus has a horizontal bar running through it, dividing the beads into two groups:

  • Upper bead(s) — sit above the bar. Each upper bead is worth 5 in that column.
  • Lower beads — sit below the bar. Each lower bead is worth 1 in that column.

A bead only “counts” toward the number once it’s pushed toward the bar. Beads pushed away from the bar don’t count.

Step 2: Understand Place Value (Columns)

Just like our regular number system, each column on the abacus represents a place value:

  • The far right column = ones (1–9)
  • The next column to the left = tens (10–99)
  • The next one = hundreds (100–999)

To read the value of one column, add together whatever beads are pushed toward the bar:

  • One upper bead touching the bar = 5
  • Add however many lower beads are also touching the bar (each worth 1)

Example: If no upper bead is touching the bar, and three lower beads are touching it, that column reads: 0 + 3 = 3

Once you can read a single column, reading a multi-digit number is just repeating the same process across each column, left to right.

Example: Say the hundreds column reads 4, the tens column reads 7, and the ones column reads 2. Reading left to right gives you 472.

This is exactly how you’d read the digits if they were written on paper — the abacus just represents each digit physically with beads instead of ink.

Step 5: Setting the Abacus to Zero

Before starting any calculation, all beads need to be reset to zero:

  • Push all upper beads away from the bar (up, toward the top frame)
  • Push all lower beads away from the bar (down, toward the bottom frame)

When no beads are touching the bar in any column, the abacus reads zero everywhere — you’re ready to begin.

A Simple Practice Example

Let’s read the number 28 together:

  1. Go to the tens column (second from the right). Push 2 lower beads toward the bar → tens column reads 2 (representing 20)
  2. Go to the ones column (far right). Push the upper bead toward the bar (worth 5) and 3 lower beads toward the bar (worth 3) → ones column reads 5 + 3 = 8
  3. Reading left to right: tens column (2) + ones column (8) = 28
